Apple's TV app arrives on Google Play for Android phones and tablets

Apple extends its streaming client from Google TV to Android's mobile form factors, and adds in-app subscription on both surfaces.

What Apple actually shipped to Google Play

The concrete change is narrow and easy to miss: the Apple TV app, which has run on Google TV since 2021, is now downloadable from the Google Play Store onto Android phones and tablets. Where Apple's presence on Google's platforms was previously confined to the television, it now reaches the two mobile form factors most Android users actually hold.

The source lists what that unlocks for phone and tablet users: subscription to Apple TV+, access to the library of Apple Original shows and movies, and MLS Season Pass, described as the home of Major League Soccer. That last item matters — live sports rights are the kind of content people expect to carry with them on a phone, not just watch from a couch.

Subscription moves inside the app on both surfaces

A second, quieter part of the announcement concerns billing surface. Google TV users can now subscribe to Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass 'right from their Google TV device,' and the new mobile app carries the same ability. For a frontend team, that means the subscription flow is no longer strictly a redirect to the web — the purchase path is being brought into the client on Google's platforms.

The alternative Apple names is tv.apple.com, the web endpoint that has long carried sign-up on platforms where in-app purchase was awkward. Offering in-app subscription alongside the web option is a real product decision about where the transaction happens, not just where the video plays.

Four years from television to handset

The 2021 Google TV launch and this 2025 mobile release bracket a deliberate sequencing. Apple built and maintained a working TV app on Google's living-room platform first, then extended the same brand to Android's phone and tablet builds. The shows cited as the draw — 'Severance,' 'Slow Horses,' 'The Morning Show,' 'Ted Lasso,' and films like 'Wolfs' and 'The Instigators' — are the same catalog; only the device targets expanded.

Reusing a proven client and porting it to new Android surfaces is a lower-risk path than a fresh build, and it explains why the announcement reads as an availability update rather than a product launch. The interesting engineering question is how much of the Google TV app carried over to the mobile targets versus how much had to be rebuilt for touch and smaller screens.

The specific implication: content owners are treating the client as portable

For teams building streaming or subscription frontends, the takeaway from this particular move is that Apple is treating its viewing client and its billing flow as things to be deployed across a rival's ecosystem, device class by device class, rather than fenced to its own hardware. Presence on Google TV since 2021 was the beachhead; Google Play phones and tablets are the expansion; and in-app subscription on both is the connective tissue that makes each surface a place to acquire customers, not just serve pixels.
