Meta turns its messaging apps into a customer-service agent platform
Meta Business Agent already runs for more than a million businesses on WhatsApp and Messenger. The new Business Agent Platform adds enterprise controls and connectors to Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee.
What Meta shipped
Meta Business Agent automates customer interactions across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram — answering business-specific questions, recommending products from catalogs, booking appointments, qualifying leads, deciding when a human should take over, and responding in a customer's local language. Meta says more than a million businesses already use it on WhatsApp and Messenger, against more than a billion active business threads a day across the three apps.
The platform layer
The new Meta Business Agent Platform gives businesses the infrastructure to build, customize and deploy agents at scale, with enterprise-grade controls, guardrails and measurement, and connectors to systems including Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee. Additional features include morning briefings that catch owners up on missed chats and insights on customer threads. Activation is currently free, with paid subscription tiers announced for the coming months.
The distribution is the strategy
The notable bet here is placement rather than model capability: Meta is putting the agent where customers already are, inside the billion-plus daily business threads on its messaging apps, instead of asking businesses to send customers to a separate destination. For teams weighing how to deploy a support agent, that reframes the first question from which model to which surface — and whether meeting customers in an existing channel outweighs the control of owning your own.
